While the insurance industry had its own "blacklist" words, muscle car makers started playing games with words themselves in 1972 to throw them off track. The 72 GTO was actually an option (once again) on the Lemans so you could tell your agent you just bought a Lemans and get a much lower rate. Other examples of this "obfuscation": Chevrolet simply called its muscle car the "Chevelle" without citing the "SS" (Super Sport) option; Oldsmobile called the 442 the "Cutlass"; Plymouth dropped the GTX model ID and Dodge dropped the R/T (Road & Track) designation, and did not advertise or promote the Rally 440 package although it was still available. |
