Purple People Eater (kitbash)

Built by: Jon Ferren in Hollywood, FL

Here's a 1/25th scale of the infamous Purple People Eater car that has been creating quite a stir on the car show scene. You can see pix of the real car on Brandon Flannery's site. The real car has also been a cover car feature in Rod and Custom magazine.

Here's a site that shows it in its early development.

The body is a combo of the Monogram '30 5-window coupe (the top half, severely chopped, obviously) that I got as a 2-car kit release coinciding with the Untouchables (?) movie. The other car in the kit was a Rolls Royce. The bottom part of the body is from Revell Model A sedan deliveries cobbled together along with some sheet styrene in places. The front lower cowl flares are from the Orange Crate.

The engine is Revell "Parts Pak" Pontiac (very close to the real car's engine) with some added features; Stromberg '97' carbs from the parts box, fuel lines made with solder rod, fuel log from square tube styrene, intake scoops from Replicas and Miniatures of Maryland (AWESOME quality resin stuff!!). Headers are parts box pieces cut up to fit (I think originally from the AMT Double Dragster kit, as are the front wheels).

The frame is a highly modified Revell Model A, '32 grill shell from one of the many versions of that year car. The Revell Model A sedan gave up its front axle, mounted to a notched frame with AMT Double Dragster radius rods. The front spindles are from the parts box and were made pose-able.

The interior is fairly simple as is the interior on the real car. Floor pan, driveshaft tunnel, seat, steering wheel, roll bar and Moon tank located in the passenger seat location! Not exactly NHRA legal! The rear wheels and tires are from one of the old Tony Nancy drag cars, probably the 22 Jr. Paint is flat black with purple pearl over that, shot with DullCote to finish it off. The only thing that has not been done is the "Shifters" Car Club logo painted on the back.
