For example, the same big engine block housed the original Tempest/Le Mans/Catalina 326, the super duty 421, then the GTO's 389, the 400, the 428 and eventually, the 455. This was a decided advantage for Pontiac as they were able to get a "leg-up" in the supercar race since both internal and external competitors' engines (with their thinner structures) had to be re-engineered and tested thoroughly before they could be shoveled into their cars. Within three years however, everyone had their own powerful engines and supercars meeting the GTO head-on in the marketplace. |
