Smoky Hills and the Toadstools

Out of Colorado and into Kansas. Looking for those big fields of wheat, but I guess it's all been harvested. Weather is holding up quite well. So is the GTO. Now it's simply a matter of relaxing during the rest of the journey. No more spectacular vistas and mountains to "distract" me. I should make good time.

To the left: This is the Smoky Hills areas of Kansas. Very strange rock "toadstools" are indigenous to this area.

73 facts about 1973
To the consternation of baseball purists, the American League institutes the designated hitter rule, allowing a non-fielding batter to replace the pitcher in all at-bats. Yankee Ron Blomberg becomes 1st designated hitter: he walks in his first at-bat.

73 facts about the GTO
Pontiac V8 engines all used the same external dimensions. Their sidewalls and structure allowed Pontiac to take the same engine block and bore it out to a number of CID options.

For example, the same big engine block housed the original Tempest/Le Mans/Catalina 326, the super duty 421, then the GTO's 389, the 400, the 428 and eventually, the 455. This was a decided advantage for Pontiac as they were able to get a "leg-up" in the supercar race since both internal and external competitors' engines (with their thinner structures) had to be re-engineered and tested thoroughly before they could be shoveled into their cars. Within three years however, everyone had their own powerful engines and supercars meeting the GTO head-on in the marketplace.
