There
is No War In Provo
|
But I'll never forget where I was on September 11, 2001. And when the war on terrorism started, I was in a Holiday Inn in Provo, Utah. I looked long and hard at the paper. I watched a bit of CNN in the lobby while I drank my coffee. It was weird. Half a world away, all hell was breaking loose for the umpteenth time in human history, but here in idyllic Provo, life seemed perfect. Man, I must be the luckiest guy in America. Did all the sacrifices, lives, and rescues of America's wars occur so I could take this 73 GTO Odyssey? If this is part of the "American way of life", then I guess so. But right now, it seems quite trivial. One thing is for sure, life in the U.S. will never be quite the same. To the left: God Bless the USA. |

facts about the GTO
The original 389 CID GTO engines ('64-'65'-66) were powered by a "Tri-powered carburetor". Sometimes referred to as a "Six-pack", these three two-barrel carburetors were first introduced as a performance option on the early 60s Catalinas, Bonnevilles, Grand Prixs, and the Catalina 2+2. On the 389 GTO, the tri-power pumped out 348 hp (gross). Most of the time, the car was serviced by the center carb only--even up to 100 MPH. This center carb was larger than the two outside ones. When the accelerator was stomped more than 2/3 of the way down, the other two "outside" carbs would kick in, and well you KNOW what happened then: Woooooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmm. GM, anticipating new federal regulations and acting like candy-asses once again, eliminated tri-powered induction in mid-1966. Pontiac engineering switched to a Rochester four-barrel carburetor called the "Quadrajet". Over time, it proved as capable as the tri-power setup, but those GM killjoys would keep coming back to try and kill the performance out of Pontiacs and the GTO. Show me a Tri-Power setup |
